What’s New
I am left with mostly the tiny details at this point. Because the brushes that came with the kit suck, I ordered my own. Unfortunately, even the smallest brush in that set was too large. However, Sam found and ordered some micro brushes for me, and they are much better suited to the task. But even with the better brushes, I’m plagued by crappy paint.
Because the details are tiny, I have a tremor, and the paint is clumpy and doesn’t spread well, my progress is slow-going at this point—but going nonetheless. Using a magnifying glass, I am painstakingly attempting to finesse each minute cell.
Today will be especially nerve wracking as I begin using the darkest color. Because there will be such a stark contrast between it and the other colors, there is no margin for error. It will be quite apparent if I make a mistake [see below]. Also, this particular paint will. not. spread.
On the Horizon
After all of my complaining, you may be surprised to hear that I actually ordered my next kit! Despite the challenges I’ve faced, I have really been enjoying myself. Plus, I’ve learned a thing or two, which will hopefully provide for a better experience next time:
- The paint-by-number is different than the original artwork and not for the better. With that in mind, it’s best to view the big picture (along with the original artwork, which is available on the Colourmost website) from time to time because you may want to change the color choices. The design and color choices on a lot of my flowers, for instance, are especially egregious. Had I realized what I was actually painting beforehand, I could have tweaked things.
- I’ve ordered a clear gesso in order to properly prepare my canvas for painting. By doing this, it should provide a smoother surface on which to paint.
- While it’s probably better to use a matte medium, I can add a drop or two of water to thin out the paint. However, I swear that there’s this specific green that gets more clumpy after adding water!
- I will never-ever buy another paint-by-number kit with so many tiny details!
Below is my next project. The finished print will be perfect for my second bathroom.
Love the end product of your painting by numbers.
Thanks for stopping by Carolyne! Unfortunately, that’s not my finished paint-by-number that you saw. That is the original artwork from which the paint-by-number was created. I wish mine looked that good! The actual paint-by-number is quite different than the original. Plus my shakiness is apparent in my own painting. All in all, it’s still a pretty picture to hang in the spare bedroom.
